Coastal Hazard and Social Vulnerability

Notes and Limitations

The Social Vulnerability components presented here come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry/ Geospatial Research, Analysis, and Services Program (2018) Social Vulnerability Index. Retrieved from https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/placeandhealth/svi/index.html. It is based on 2018 American Community Survey (ACS) data from US Census. Fiscal Stress data is sourced from Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s (DHCD) Commission on Local Government.

The presentation of the Coastal Hazard and Social Vulnerability across the time horizons reflects a changing hazard and a static (2018 estimate) representation of population and demographics. This is provided to offer a sense for how the increasing coastal hazard will impact populations and demographics. Future iterations of the impact assessment can be improved by leveraging more detailed, complete, or recent data sets. The 2020 Census data showed, in aggregate, that Virginia grew by almost 8% in population since 2010, however ACS products based on the 2020 Census were impacted by the pandemic and their status is unclear at this time.
